Fairy Tales 2016: Architecture Storytelling Competition

HIDDEN FERMI PARADOX

IT was May the 13th of 2030, out of nowhere when a young man started sharing his believes and theories that planet earth is at risk and we need to start treating the situation before waking up late to discover the dystopia we’re living, When earth’s temperature reaches 2 C because of our inability to control the rise of greenhouse gasses, calling out to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, Otherwise it will be the end of the world and we will pass by calamities days.

He started to build a few shelters and skyscraper for people to survive, The function of the shelters and skyscrapers outer skin works in two ways, one is covered with a skin which is more similar to human’s skin, a breathing system adapted by causing a shape change once it realizes an increase or decrease of the temperature and the other one is an outer electromagnetic skin attracts the polluted air and dust, providing a clean fresh air for the inhabitants to breathe.

His theories occupied the daily news, it became an issue to discuss, at that time no one ever believed him, people started calling him insane, the government was pursuing him because of his unauthorized action toward the situation, terror and chaos were deployed everywhere in the city.
Architecture Storytelling Competition by Nour Djellali
People were between a believer and a deception, the believers began to follow his action by preparing shelters underground, some were hiding in their houses terrified, while others immigrated out of the city and every day passed people thought it was the inevitable end.

The Horror continues…
Until they caught this man to end these rumors, they decided to kill him, but he was so confident that even if they killed him he will come back again one day to save the planet.

After he was murdered, people were shocked he was not bleeding at all, his heart beat sounded like  Doop loop, Doop loop, Doop loop ...

They freaked out and decided to do some anatomy on his body, they took a section of his head by cutting it into two vertical pieces and here was the big surprise!!

It was a kind of an unreadable map covering his entire brain, illusion swirl... Lots of mysteries there that no one can ever solve, the deeper they investigate the more worried they got, they agreed to store his corpse and keep it under constant control.

At that time they made an announcement to calm people down and live their lives normally, people were so happy that nothing of what he claimed had happened so far...
Days passed... 000, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500,
Changes started to appear in his brain section, it was like a map developing itself, people become curious, earth’s composition started changing, a message for us that no one payed attention to, the analysts said it’s a trick that he left behind after his death to fall into and follow him blindly. They suppressed the issue again, as if nothing happened at all.

Quiet days full of peep sparrows out of my room window that was the last scene that I remember, after the onset of strange events in recent times...
The extinction of some species of animals and birds, regardless of the migration of the remaining ones out of the city.

Earthquakes...
Volcanos...
Floods...
High water levels...
Thawing ice...
The events continue…..
Architecture Storytelling Competition by Nour Djellali
I was sleeping till I woke up to the sound of an explosion, my heart skipped a beat, I went to look out the window, it was totally muddy that I barely could see anything, I heard screaming, exacerbated my tension, I came out of the house to see huge smoky clouds covering the skies, a blowing dust and soil everywhere, there were thousands of dead bodies and people bleeding everywhere, a huge rock blazing, it was kind of comet that left a wreaked havoc, I walked along the street, police, tanks and ambulance were spreading everywhere.

Suddenly a strong glow just showed up...
I couldn’t look at it at all, I don’t trust my feeble memory, the street  was vibrating  under my feet I felt a heat transmission from the ground gripped my body, cracks overrun the street, the earth nucleus inflamed, getting ready to split, it was a non-matching mirror below the ground.

Was it a nightmare?

Architecture Storytelling Competition by Nour Djellali

I was unconscious for a while, I heard a whistling sound “SSS  ... SSSS  ... SSS“, Made me feel disordered, my head was flashing with codes, destruction scenes, it was painful, I was not able to see what’s going on around me anymore ..
I started regaining my consciousness, I opened my eyes and I was not sure that I was on the same place before feeling muddle headed, I thought I woke up after years, there were strange beams of light in the sky, I ran from the intensity of fear, turning left and right looking for a human being.

As I walked by the end of the street, I was shocked, earth was divided into two, with a nucleus levitating in between, one Smoky destroyed part and the other one was totally green & sustainable.

A huge invasion, flying vehicles with a spaceship appearance, trying to save the living.

I remembered Enrico Fermi’s theory, the atomic scientist. If he was alive he would’ve seen his theories come to life. Fermi said: “Aliens have had more than enough time to pepper the Galaxy with their presence”, which had always prompted him to ask "where is everybody?"

Here they are Fermi, they have shown themselves to take us where “The environment is in us, not outside of us, the trees are our lungs, the rivers our bloodstream. We are all interconnected, and what you do to the environment, ultimately you do to yourself”. Said lan Somerhalder

Tainan waterfront

Netherland based architecture studio MVRDV was announced winner for the competition to reconnect Tainan’s center to its waterfront. Following a flourishing period of the fishing and marine industry that led to a rapid expansion of the city, the city waterfront was forgotten and left behind, when a big China-Town Mall was built, although it didn’t last long, and soon it was abandoned. The team’s design is aiming at re-creating a long lost connection to the nature by ”transforming the China-Town Mall and its perpendicular axis Haian Road, which together form the T-axis” and to ”re-establish the waterfront connection and provide an important stimulus to the redevelopment of the neighbourhood by encouraging the use of public spaces and creating a cohesive urban language. ”

According to the proposal the plan is to use the structure of the China-Town Mall as a base for the new public space. Alongside the public square, a luxuriant green lagoon, playgrounds and walking lanes, there will be also small commercial boutiques and kiosks, an info point, a teahouse and a gallery. The routing system is configured in such a way as to reduce the traffic speed, and at night the roads in this area would be completely closed, in order to give pedestrians access to pedestrian only route.

Winy Maas: “This flooded old mall is going to be a poetic lagoon and an hip urban pool: a symbolic act.” Alongside the waterfront, an artificial beach will be created, together with a promenade, to restore the lost view other the sea. ”The current amalgamation of different pavements will be unified according to various functions to improve wayfinding. This approach is further applied to the scattered objects along the road: ventilation shafts, elevators and entrances to the underground parking garage will be wrapped in a glass skin, and extended to create new pavilions, kiosks and viewing towers. An array of ‘lanterns’ of various sizes will appear, activating the public space and creating a cohesive urban language. Additionally, local trees and shrubs will be planted all along Haian Road, creating a green corridor through to the new lagoon and the reconnected waterfront.”

Station City Square
The project site, located close to South Nanjing transportation hub, acts as a gate between the old Nanjing City and the new developing industrial area. The site is equally divided by 2 hectares of public green area, located on the axis that connects the Yangtze River and the railway station central plaza.
Station City Square 01
Although the 8 plots designated for this new mixed use development were clearly delineated by streets, the project manages to fuse them into a continuous walk – able urban space. The central green space spreads throughout the other 8 sites, connecting the public squares on each plot through pedestrian routes designed using pavement, hinting at site interconnectivity.
Station City Square 02
Also, the urban pedestrian area is spread over 3 layers of roof gardens that share the view to the central park. The Functional layout includes offices, commerce and hotels and serviced apartments. Nanjing City is defined by some important natural elements such as springs, rivers, lakes and forest.
Station City Square 03
The Yangzi River crosses the city from west to east. Also, the Xuanwu Lake, Qinhuai River and Jinchuan River contribute to the unique natural landscape of the city. An old Chinese proverb says that ‘the best things are like the water: water is softness and water is hardness’.
Station City Square 04
Seeing the importance of this element, the original idea of the scheme comes from water and develops into a unique concept as ‘glaring stone and flowing water’- the unique contrasting temperament of the city.
Station City Square 05
An important design criteria for active and efficient urban communities is to design for transit, biking and pedestrian mobility, not around the car transit – in other words, design using narrower streets and smaller blocks, with active, useful and interesting street fronts.
Station City Square UA studio 7
The current pattern of development in China is based on large development blocks, often 500 m by 500 m in size and a network of wide arterial streets. We believe that this type of urban design has a negative impact on retail activity and transit usage.
Station City Square UA studio 7
In order to make this new development more sustainable, flexible and energy efficient we used design tools and practices such as networks of paths and streets that promote walking, mixed-use zoning comprising a mix of different building types, activities and social classes and considering a 24 hour occupation of the urban area, diversity developed around a central ‘green’ space. UA Studio7 Project:

Shenzhen Bay Super City
“1” represents the whole, the unified manifestation of the separate “3’s”. By putting together 3 distinctive processes and functions, 1 stronger and efficient complex can be achieved.
Shenzhen Bay Super City 01
In the design, we are trying to illustrate that we can create a unified compound, a mixed use super center, rather than a simple stacked combination of economic, ecological and cultural domains.
Shenzhen Bay Super City 02
According to the latest Shenzhen City Master Plan, the Central Shenzhen Bay region will become the most important pole in Shenzhen and Hong Kong metropolitan area.
Shenzhen Bay Super City 03
The planning goal is to create in the Shenzhen Bay a world-class city center, “super headquarters base”, “major economic center”, “super regional environment” and “super city image” being the key words of the design bid. We used three design techniques to achieve our goal:
Shenzhen Bay Super City 04
1. In order to free up as much space as possible at the street level for the public, most of the required area is organized into three super high rise towers. The towers merge together both at the upper levels through a sky bridge and in the underground.
Shenzhen Bay Super City 05
 2. The ecology efficiency of the development was increased by integrating the city park in a eco-merging system, connecting the levels by sunken galleries, rain gardens and planted floating bridges.
Shenzhen Bay Super City model
 3. Over the analysis of its demographic and social situation, we found that Shenzhen is a typical “immigrant” city, with a high proportion of young people living and working there. With this in mind, we tried to design a new type of development, a vibrant city where various functions like working, living, culture and entertainment merge together.
