In the tradition of conceptual and visionary architecture proposals, SPARK Architects reveal their design for a floating hawker centre – the Solar Orchid. This concept for self-contained, solar-powered, floating hawker pods suggests a way to mend the now distant relationship between Singapore and its waterscapes, while celebrating and reinvigorating a favoured local pass time.

Singapore was built on an intimate relationship with the water, which has historically been an artery of culture, commerce and recreation. However, the recent decades of urban development, industrialisation and land reclamation have largely severed this relationship, deleting most of the traditional kampungsand kelongs from the coast, inland water bodies, and sea.

SPARK’s concept for a floating hawker centre draws on our experience of the city, its culture and heritage, and all that we enjoy about it, to imagine a new relationship with Singapore’s public waterscape. This visionary project imagines a mobile, reconfigurable and sustainable floating hawker centre that could ‘pop up’ in a variety of locations and formats.

The Solar Orchid recalls the mobility of the original Singaporean hawker – the mobile street vendor – with self-contained, solar-powered, lightweight floating pods. Each pod accommodates cooking stalls (incorporating built-in exhaust, water, gas, electrical, waste collection and water recycling services) as well as table settings.

The protective canopy is an energy-generating inflated ETFE pillow incorporating thin-film photovoltaic cells. It complements the $11 million Singaporean government initiative to develop floating solar islands in Singapore’s reservoirs. The Solar Orchids can be clustered together in various formations to create hawker centres that are able to respond to different locations and conditions. They would leave no trace of their presence due to their self-contained nature.

“The idea of reinventing the hawker centre grew from the widely documented observation that the popularity of the traditional hawker lifestyle has begun to wane. We seek to re-energise the hawker centre typology while retaining the soul of a very Singaporean dining experience”

Venice has a rich and diverse architectural style, the most famous of which is the Gothic style. Venetian Gothic architecture is a term given to a Venetian building style combining use of the Gothic lancet arch with Byzantine and Ottoman influences. The style originated in14th-century Venice, where the confluence of Byzantine style from Constantinople met Arab influence from Moorish Spain. Chief examples of the style are the Doge's Palace and the Ca' d'Oro in the city. The city also has several Renaissance and Baroque buildings, including the Ca' Pesaro and the Ca' Rezzonico.

Like all architecture, Spanish Architecture is about buildings and buildings are not merely physical structures but also a means of communication. Within Spanish architecture, they reflect community values or pursuits (e.g. Roman coliseums or theatres, Christian, Muslim, Jewish houses of worship). They inform us of the movement of people, who take their architectural traditions with them in the form, for example, of temples. Spanish architecture also conveys the impact of political events in, for instance, the construction of castles or palaces. These buildings --temples, castles, palaces—communicated in different ways the idea of power and control, and were meant to last. Others buildings, e.g. the homes of ordinary citizens were less important, although many have survived in the historical quarters of many cities.

the rather small city has a population of 1.6 million people and a 37 billion USD economy based largely on trade,manufacturing and financial services. contrary to popular belief petrol and natural gas only make up a small percentage of revenues.the city has gaine world-wide attention in the past few years because of its booming economy and ambitious architectural projects.with a focus on business and tourism, the city is ramping up construction on an
unprecedented level. in fact, dubai is said to be home to 15% to 25% of the world's 125,000 construction cranes.don't think that the architectural expansion is over, because a slew of new project are on the table and in the works as we speak.

Semnan University Project description from the Architect:

- Locating at Semnan university campus as a focal point, offers an architectonic articulation with different architectural styles of surrounding faculties in the campus. The concept has been configured on the basis of two separated but compounded architectural constructions.
– An auditorium and a Library-as the hub of campus .The main challenge was to create two buildings with different spatial characteristic .A calm ,encouraging and convenient space for academic library and on the other side,an auditorium with conference halls and maintenance spaces seeking to be welcoming, dynamic and crowded. Hence, the project points towards an eloquent and sober architectural dialogue in an academic context.

Semnan University Auditorium and Library

The spatial planning responds not only to technical and functional requirements, but also seeks a unique spatial architectural identity via integrating two volumes into a comprehensive entity.In fact, perforated porches and water pools play critical roles in natural air circulation and provide a presentable foyer for meeting academics and students as prime audience. The project attempts to approach a monumental and memorable picture of academic library and auditorium.
The woven and crossing hasps on the façade link volumes visually while triangular dark glasses openness illuminate spaces and illustrate authentic play of light and shadow. These elements provide a quiet atmosphere while diminish the sunlight radiation particularly in the hot summers.
The Auditorium complex includes a 1000 seats auditorium, and 100, 200 seats convention halls, ,a multi-functional hall , foyer and etc. The colored saloons are surrounded via corridors and environment. The library includes reading cluster, informal sitting newspaper, multi-lingual storages,computer station ,reference collection hall ,offices, exquisite book area, etc. Merging white travertine stone come along with transparent elements provide different quality and visual appearance throughout the day by capturing morning, midday and evening light.

Belarus soccer stadium

A bulbous, aluminium-clad stadium, designed by OFIS Arhitekti for Belarusian football club FC BATE Borisov, has been officially inaugurated two years after its scheduled opening date.
-The 13,000 seat stadium features a shimmering aluminium exterior with circular windows, designed to give the impression of a perforated fabric skin stretched over the “skeleton” form of the domed building.

- The rounded shape was engineered to improve acoustics on the pitch, which is oriented north to south to ensure that sunlight is evenly distributed for both teams playing in a match.

Belarus soccer stadium

- Spectator seating is arranged around the playing field in rows of 17 along the sides and rows of 27-28 along the short lengths.

- The upper west gallery is reserved for press, with seating for up to 40 journalists, while VIP stands with 250 seats are positioned on the east side.

- Approximately 3,000 square metres of public facilities are located on the ground level of the stadium, including restaurants, bars, shops, a bowling alley and a fitness centre.

Fez House/ Alvaro Leite Siza Vieira -archi2o

Fez House

Designed and built by Alvaro Leite Siza Vieira, the Fez House is located in Porto, Portugal. This home and studio space, ‘the work of my life’ according to Siza, took 12 years to complete, assembling the site, designing the house, and then building it. The home’s size is almost statuesque with its lines and angles.

To do architecture it’s necessary a client, a promoter. When I realized, in certain moment of my career that to continue my path I would need to occupy that role too, I didn’t hesitate.
I conciliated objectives, interests, goals, I pursued an ideal and I achieved a dream. I also had the need to be, in this work, supervisor, coordinator and project director, in an organization in direct administration. I started this work in 2004 and I finished it in early of 2005. The construction begins in February of 2006 and was concluded in July of 2010.

The project of personal house-atelier is the first where is present touching figures in their own atmosphere, exalting pieces, personalities that derive from history, versus the sensibility, recreating individually realities, with no intention previously defined. They appear in the middle of delivery to ones believe beyond what we need (specific program and functional), sublimation underlying to authentic communication of the creative process.
When the modern is old, a pass appears in the most eloquent and distant expression. The affirmation of a new Romantism, of a Classic Renaissance, came directly of the origins, with the interior load not less important.
The home like laboratory of ones dream that represent the drives, ideas, tensions and strength behind de matter.
The stories and its emotions that condense the symbolism that represent. The figures and humans relations. In this project, borned from free drawings of harlequin – laughing about the problems, the tensions, the conflicts, the mismatches, between other dramas that surround this activity – that transforms in a geometric abstraction, where there’s no place for frames or glasses, I rehearse the affirmation of a new Classicism.
Transitional spaces, the porticos, the lamps, the light, the doorknobs, the doors, the hand rails, even some paintings and the furniture was designed for me, but also other of XIX century (timeless pieces) that came from my family that fit the environment perfectly, beyond other elements, complement the creation of environments that exalt Mozart, Leonardo da Vinci, Miguel Angelo and surrounded by a lot of extraordinary Art works, that aren’t limited to the atmosphere of purely imaginary architectural.

The conclusion of this ideal was possible due to a personal characteristic of obstinated stubbornness and dissatisfaction non less expressive. It started 12 years ago, with an acquisition of a lot without access to the street and for that a lot more financially favourable.
In the next 6 years I tried to find a connection that would make this possible.
I was lucky that a promoter of one unoccupied lot was a direct cousin of my mother that finally would sell it to me. I was forced to buy another lot next to this one to make the business feasible, that I sold with a personal approved project. In this way, I capitalized, investing all the money in this business. During the necessary operation of regrouping of the lands, appears the project, result of one discourse of paradoxical intentions.

The volumes organized themselves by vertical and horizontal sections. One programme built by one atelier facing to the street, garages and service areas working with a hinge and finally the House related with the garden. One of underground storey corresponds to the foundations, another ground storey in granite, corresponding to the public and social areas, and even the top story.
If In one hand, the ground floor expressed them self of inside to outside, of the intimacy to the exterior in an explosive manifesting, creating the necessary openings, the porticos of transition and the respective skylights of natural light; for other hand, the upper storey implode.

The aggression of exterior create symbolic tensions, pressures that recognize themselves of outside to inside, reducing their volumetry, giving rise to one figurative image.
Through a geometric rigorous abstraction to make possible the constructive system, built by lozenges associated in different angles that confer higher tridimensionality, I found the proportion that I wanted, the horizontality I wished, the orientation predefined, the objectified and determined direction. The symbolism of the figure that sublime the oppression of one system.
