Dalian Library Competition Design Concept
The engaging and dynamic proposal for the Dalian Library by 10 design represents an attention for both an urban and internal connectivity. The library is intended to be a transformative environment that pulls visitors into a unique landscape. The building weaves into the ground creating a series of courtyards and topographic undulations- rooting itself, and then sweeping up into the air forming a bold urban landmark becoming a community center for the neighborhood. More images and architects’ description after the break.

The shifting of the mass creates spaces ranging from the intimate spaces for reflection in the courtyard to the dynamic and expansive views offered from the tower volume. The tower volume has a series of internal voids and terraced spaces to further enhance the variety of spatial conditions and to provide internal connectivity. A series of retail functions including cafes will help draw a larger audience to the library. A large media center that shares the central drop-off can be used after hours and function independently.

The mass responds and is shaped by views into the site and outward to the surrounding sea and mountains. A green hill over the media center forms an outdoor gathering space and amphitheater and will offer water views to the southern sea. A roof top café on the tower volume provides panoramic views of the mountains and sea.

The façade of the library is a dark grey brass that will develop a beautiful patina over time. The metal skin will have a natural resistance to the marine conditions and harsh weather. The smaller voids in the buildings mass will use an anodized aluminum brass alloy to remain vibrant and colorful as the rest of the building transforms with time.

Dalian Museum Competition Design Concept

hong kong and shanghai-based international firm 10design has proposed the ‘dalian museum’, for urban planning topics positioned within the heart of the government district in dalian, china. the building’s external appearance responds to the established sculptures
and parks scattered throughout the city, becoming a focal element in itself. the form opens towards an adjacent park to the west,  visually incorporating the current urban planning elements and green spaces of the encompassing context into the museum.
10 Design, Dalian Museum
The planning museum is envisioned to be a new civic sculpture for the city located at the heart of the main the governmental district. The sculptural nature of the building ties to the existing network of sculptural elements and parks placed throughout the city. The building becomes a technological bloom as the massing opens towards the main parks to the west. The form of the building takes inspiration from the nautical influences and seeks to become a symbol of technological progress and green evolution.

The building uses a photocatalytic nano-coating of Titanium Dioxide on the outer zinc rain screen to neutralize air pollution and remove dirt. The cleansing reaction is maintained 24 hours a day by using UV lights on the façade at night which are powered by PV cells. The lighting scheme will be symbolic of a blooming flower- the main golden glow facing west towards the government buildings and the CBD. The inner aluminum façade layer uses a polymer coating that increases insulation values by 10-20 percent, and provides marine and fungal resistance. These nano-coatings are really nothing more than simple paints and will provide dramatic performance with minimal cost. The use of the self-cleaning nano-coating on the façade will keep the skin clean of all dirt and organic stains for years without any maintenance.

The building also minimizes east west facades and pulls all entries away from the northern winds to maximize passive solar ideas. The government hopes the project will inspire green ideas and further sustainable design in the city.
