The qatar stadium is part of the Health and Wellness Precinct, within Qatar Foundation Education City and is conceived as a proposed host venue for the 2022 FIFA World Cup™ and one of the principal sports complexes in Qatar. Additionally the Health & Wellness Precinct includes an indoor aquatic centre with two Olympic size pools and a diving pool, a multipurpose sports pavilion housing an indoor athletics track and tennis academy, plus external training fields.
The qatar stadium will have a tournament capacity of 40,000 spectators, which is later reduced in legacy mode to 25,000 thanks to a modular design that facilitates dismantling of the upper seating tier.
Arup is providing a complete service including structural design, building services, façade engineering, civil engineering and infrastructure, together with consulting services for stadium cooling design, sustainability, fire safety, security and ICT as well as audio visual services.
In order to meet the challenges of this project, the team carried out a pioneering R&D program for the stadium cooling system design, which aims to ensure the safety of players and spectator comfort.

“Using an innovative computational fluid dynamics analysis, we were able to design an intelligent stadium cooling system which uses a series of passive measures, including bespoke stadium roof geometry, to protect the stadium bowl from the harsh external conditions and minimise energy use.”– David Castro, Associate Director and Project Manager, Arup
The project is targeting a LEED Gold certification rating and incorporates a variety of additional sustainable design aspects such as green roofs, photovoltaic and solar thermal panels, energy use reduction initiatives and water recycling.
Arup Madrid is leading the engineering team on this project and working closely with RFA Fenwick Iribarren Architects, with support from our staff in Berlin, Doha, Dubai and London, consolidating a team which has counted on over 200 multi-disciplinary professionals.qatar stadium

Escale Numérique, by JCDecaux and Mathieu Lehanneur, Paris, France.

The city of Paris aimed to increase the function of its urban infrastructure in 2012 when city officials held a competition to design intelligent street furniture. The need to integrate technology into the urban context is imminent for many cities, and this has led to a variety of design solutions. The winner of this competition was the world-leading outdoor advertising company JCDecaux, in collaboration with designer Mathieu Lehanneur. Their project, Escale Numérique (Digital Break), creates a series of WiFi stations where people can access information about the city and connect to the Internet.

Smart Urban Furniture

This urban development project is designed to create a space for people to use the Internet. A shade structure is created from a plant-covered roof supported by architectural elements that resemble tree trunks. Concrete swivel chairs are anchored underneath this roof, with a table and outlets for each person.
WATCH: Escale Numérique, it’s in French but the idea speaks for itself.

Questioning the Connection

The implementation of this project raises several questions about the function of urban infrastructure. Do we really need to be connected to the internet at all times? The urban aspect of the city is so diverse, with so many opportunities for interaction. Shouldn’t we build upon this instead of making it so easy for people to ignore their surroundings?

A Connected Haven of Peace

Located on the Rond Point des Champs-Elysées, Escale Numérique provides a sense of respite from the buzz of traffic and pedestrian movement within the city. People can sit and focus on something, whether that may be their smart phone, laptop, or a book.

The protective shelter of the roof and the access to free WiFi give people a feeling of separation from their surroundings. The access to the Internet is a revival of the underground fiber optic network that supplies the capital. These stations raise this connection from beneath the ground and make it accessible to the public.

This idea is similar to the way the Wallace Fountains brought drinking water to Parisians in the late 1800s — the drinking water that was circulating beneath their feet became directly accessible to the public in the same way the Internet cable network is being brought up for public use. An integration of the digital and physical landscapes allows users to be productive within the city in a world in which we are increasingly dependent on technology.

The Need to Be Connected
We are so reliant on technology today that when we don’t have instant access to it, we become frustrated. Not so long ago, the only way people could interact was through face-to-face conversations. They got things done without the ease of computers or smart phones.

The rapid development of technology in recent years has created a new paradigm of interaction and productivity. So much of our world now depends on the Internet, and our lives are now stored in the cloud or on our hard drives. It is simply how we get things done in this age of modernization. The benefits of technology, such as increased efficiency and access to information, are not without the negative effects of decreased social interaction and disconnection from the natural world.

Is Avoiding Feeling Uncomfortable a Good Thing?

Escale Numérique provides a connection for Parisians and tourists; however, they do not interact with each other. The large touch screen billboard is designed to be used to find your way around the city and create an augmented reality. This was done in response to the feeling of hesitation a tourist feels when he has to ask a local for directions.

It eliminates the need for that uncomfortable interaction. However, travel inherently puts you out of your comfort zone, so why not build upon this through design? A local will know things a large touch screen could never tell you, such as the best place to eat or the best way to get there.

Public Space and Technology
Public space functions at so many levels that it is hard to ignore its importance. It shapes the way we interact with people and our surroundings, especially in cities. Today, the smartphone has enabled people to move through public spaces as if they were in their own private bubble. The typical distracted walker looking at her phone is often encountered in a city.

When you sit down in a public space, it is so easy to remove yourself from your immediate surroundings through looking at your phone, laptop, or tablet. Doing so causes a loss in the connection to place, and place is what landscape architects are supposed to design.Smart Urban Furniture

Why spend so much effort in the design and implementation of a public space if people are not going to fully appreciate it? Escale Numérique loses this connection to place that we should be creating and celebrating in the city.

Yes, this project is a beautiful integration of technology and design, but is that what the world needs? Maybe we should approach the design of public spaces from the understanding that they should create connections between people, not electronics, because that is what is lacking in cities today. Landscape architecture has the potential to be the leader in this approach to design, but it hasn’t been accomplished quite yet.

The project was awarded to Zaha Hadid following the international competition of design ended November 2012. 
On this occasion ? Japanese architect Tadao Ando (Pritzker Prize 1995), president of the competition jury, noted that "the dynamic and futuristic design of the project embodied the message that Japan wished to convey to the world." 
 Before the 2020 Olympics, the stadium designed by Zaha Hadid will host another international event of primary importance sportsman: World Cup 2019 Rugby (Rugby World Cup 2019).

In the tradition of conceptual and visionary architecture proposals, SPARK Architects reveal their design for a floating hawker centre – the Solar Orchid. This concept for self-contained, solar-powered, floating hawker pods suggests a way to mend the now distant relationship between Singapore and its waterscapes, while celebrating and reinvigorating a favoured local pass time.

Singapore was built on an intimate relationship with the water, which has historically been an artery of culture, commerce and recreation. However, the recent decades of urban development, industrialisation and land reclamation have largely severed this relationship, deleting most of the traditional kampungsand kelongs from the coast, inland water bodies, and sea.

SPARK’s concept for a floating hawker centre draws on our experience of the city, its culture and heritage, and all that we enjoy about it, to imagine a new relationship with Singapore’s public waterscape. This visionary project imagines a mobile, reconfigurable and sustainable floating hawker centre that could ‘pop up’ in a variety of locations and formats.
The Solar Orchid recalls the mobility of the original Singaporean hawker – the mobile street vendor – with self-contained, solar-powered, lightweight floating pods. Each pod accommodates cooking stalls (incorporating built-in exhaust, water, gas, electrical, waste collection and water recycling services) as well as table settings.

The protective canopy is an energy-generating inflated ETFE pillow incorporating thin-film photovoltaic cells. It complements the $11 million Singaporean government initiative to develop floating solar islands in Singapore’s reservoirs. The Solar Orchids can be clustered together in various formations to create hawker centres that are able to respond to different locations and conditions. They would leave no trace of their presence due to their self-contained nature.

“The idea of reinventing the hawker centre grew from the widely documented observation that the popularity of the traditional hawker lifestyle has begun to wane. We seek to re-energise the hawker centre typology while retaining the soul of a very Singaporean dining experience”

House of Music, project Description :

The House of Music was designed as part of a larger April 2008 master plan, also produced by Coop Himmelblau. The concert hall defines the eastern edge of the Cultural Plaza, which is linked to the city center by a low-rise, mixed use courtyard building and a high-rise hotel tower, and which opens along the promenade down to the fjord. As a complement to the cultural and leisure functions of the Nordkraft building, a former power station that was recently renovated, the House of Music and the urban spaces of the master plan transform the area into a new center for art, music, and education in Aalborg.

The House of Music is organized around the concept of sharing and synergy, while recognizing the need for independence of the individual institutions within. Wherever possible sharing of spaces is enabled and overlapping of use of public and performance spaces is supported through the design.
The House of Music in Aalborg unites cultural uses, pedagogical functions, and generous public areas in an open system that creates synergies and exchange between audiences, artists, students, and educators—a hybrid space for shared use. A 1,300-seat concert hall forms the core of a compact, U-shaped block with rooms for music education and practicing. Three additional halls of various sizes and functions round out the available performance spaces. On the north side, the building opens onto a vertical foyer with a view of the fjord. To the west, it adjoins the Cultural Plaza which links it to the city.

The basic organization uses the Foyer to connect a centralized Concert Hall with a U-shaped bar of Educational functions placed over the backstage facilities in a courtyard scheme with the Concert Hall as its center. This typology is adopted to insure good natural light and maximized views within an economical and efficient system of circulation, and to establish close, central relations to the performance and public space of the House of Music. At the same time the separation of entrances and circulations allows all of the institutions to operate independently, while at the same time the location of common functions, such as food service, lounge and other common spaces in the Foyer, ensure opportunities for meetings and encounters between the various residents of the House of Music.
