Seulmundae Halmang Museum SAMOO
The myth of Jeju Island in Gyorae-ri, Korea is about a deity called Seulmundae Halmang a tall and powerful woman said to create mountains with her bare hands and had 500 children. Her legend states that while she was making soup for her children she fell into the pot and died. This soup was then mistakenly eaten by her sons and turned them into 500 stones. This myth provided the inspiration for SAMOO’s Seulmundae Halmang Museum that incorporates the various history, culture, and myth of Jeju Island.

 The design is set around a major stone wall that forms the axis of the museum, acting as both an entrance and path to experience the journey of Jeju’s mythology. The wall links the various programs of the museum that include areas for permanent and planned exhibitions, multi-purpose rooms and support facilities. The openings incorporated into the wall also provide opportunities to see various sceneries as one travels along the wall.

The outdoor spaces use water, stone, and greenery, amongst other things, to develop eight themed spaces to allow visitors the chance to study and experience the mythical formation of the island as well as get a better insight into the history and myth associated with the land. The Sky-Pond and Mother’s Garden are some of the outdoor spaces situated along the main wall of the museum.

The wall provides not only various sceneries through openings but also functions as the main exhibition path that links the various programs such as permanent/planned exhibitions, multi-purpose rooms and support facilities. Also, various outdoor spaces such as the Sky-Pond and Mother’s Garden have been placed along the wall in harmony with the surrounding nature.

 To keep a harmonic relationship with the island and the nature there, SAMOO’s design is geared towards sustainability and preserving the natural surroundings. In regards to sustainability solar path and win path CFD simulations were conducted to ensure minimal changes to the current environment once the building is constructed. Natural ventilation, green roofs, and a water collection system were also implemented into the design to reduce energy usage and reduce heat gain.

Samoo Architects & Engineers recently unveiled the design for the new National Research Center for Endangered Species which is to be located in Yeongyang-gun, one of the cleanest environmental areas in Korea.

The complex is aimed to provide a hub for the study, education and research on rare plants and animals of the Koreanpeninsula. The masterplan of the complex tries to harmonise with the surrounding topographies while maintaining its functional features by dividing the complex into three zones; Core, Refresh, and Research.

The Core Zone consists of the visitor’s centre, office building and a quarantine facility which are all located around a radial central plaza. The location of the Core Zone near the entrance of the complex ensures easy accessibilities while guaranteeing the quarantine of all plants/animals before entering into the research centre.

The Refresh Zone consists mostly of guest-houses which will be provided not only the visitors but also researchers dispatched from other organisations. The Research Zone which provides the fundamental features needed for the complex is designed around a modular unit called the ‘Cell Unit’.

The Cell Unit is a combination of indoor/outdoor breeding farms that is grouped with research facilities. These units will provide flexibilities for future expansions according to its needs.

With a southward orientation for the buildings with consideration to wind paths that were simulated with CFD analysis, the research centre aims to provide an eco-friendly complex that ensures the maximum level of sustainability.

The Performing Arts Center is designed to provide a dynamic new landmark, symbolizing the ancient town of Silla was once the capital of the ancient city of Gyeongju.

The Down portion of the building contains an exhibition/performance space while the upper portions contain uses for education/experience and welfare. This clear zoning allows independent circulation system and management of the facilities.

The design team used a simple traditional beauty, but also implies a new vision for the future. Front curved body mass contains an exhibition space, the body mass is smooth and elegant traditional architecture roof lines modern interpretation.

An open and pleasant ambience is achieved by the combination of natural light through the skylight and ample ceiling heights. Visitors can enjoy the panoramic view of Gyeongju City on the top floor observatory. For greatest flexibility and acoustical quality of the performance hall, it is equipped with state-of-the art variable acoustic systems-architectural acoustics diffusion system and stage equipment to maximize the quality of performances.

The upper contain Education / Experience and welfare space. Clear partition of the independence of the traffic flow line system and independent facilities management system. Shining through the skylight of natural light and a well-lit dome combined to achieve an open pleasant atmosphere. Visitors can observation deck on the top floor with panoramic views of the city of Gyeongju. In order to make the performance hall with maximum flexibility and the best sound in the hall equipped with the most advanced variable sound system, PA system and stage construction equipment in order to achieve the best performance results.

The biggest challenge of this project was to let the new corporate building express the image of the company that generates energy with new value, not the traditional image of power plant building. Our design strategy was to expressing the changing image 'from East-West Power to Energy is Wonderful Power' . The design concept 'Synergy Plant' was also used to express the new symbolism of Korea East-West Power Company who will lead the future energy industry.

The location plan focused on giving the image of an open company; while the mass planning concentrated on rhythmic sense by utilizing the flow of existing topography. The facade planning created the image of a powerful and environment-friendly power generation company. They altogether contain the value of new company that creates energy for better future. The Ulsan-Woojeong Innovation City has linear city structure, which is different from existing grid-pattern city system. The new corporate building of Korea East-West Power Company will reflect the city structure and green flow of Ulsan-Woojeong Innovation City. The mass articulation and the arrangement are nature-friendly. The project site has big elevation difference more than 14rn. The design utilized this by the functional zoning of lower level mass dependent on different levels.

A great landscape in harmony with surrounding environment maintaining the flow of existing land was created. Since the project site had difficulty for vertical expansion because of aviation height limitation, horizontal dynamics was emphasized and symbolism was given by expanding the flow of existing land. The building energy load has been reduced by passive design such as atrium ventilation, maximization of natural lighting and rooftop garden. On the other hand, system functions were optimized by active design such as highly efficient equipment•material application and adopting rain-water system and grey-water system. Natural energy is actively utilized by solar energy power generation and air-conditioning by geothermal heat pump. Consequently, the corporate building of Korea East-West Power Company. The dynamic design symbolizing the global jump of an energy company will make the corporate building of Korea East-West Power Company as a new symbol of an energy company leading future energy industry and lighting the world by 'Synergy Plant'.
