Fully automated high-bay storage for seven million books – a unique facility in China; opening scheduled for 2017
Suzhou Library Building in China.
The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have won the design competition for the new construction of the Suzhou Library in China. The start of construction has been scheduled for 2016 and the opening of the complex for the end of 2017.
Suzhou Library will be built in Xiangcheng Town, an area featuring impressive artificial lakes and watercourses and a diverse range of urban functions, currently being developed to the north of the historic Suzhou city center with its many canals.
The design is determined on the one hand by external conditions – the narrow site and the need for open spaces – and on the other hand by the idea of creating, on a symbolic level, an architectural analogy to a slanted pile of books. The design reflects the external conditions with a cantilevering form of building while producing very compact volumes with the superimposed functions. This creates a building ensemble that not only extends the public space to an inner plaza, but also ensures the clear separation and organization of the different functions and entrances.
By contrast to the first floor level, the area of which has been minimized and arranged to run parallel to the street, the upper stories are more expansive and twist towards the view to the landscape. This defines the skewed level of the library façade, which features strong horizontal divisions and bright aluminum shading louvres – resembling the appearance of a slanted pile of paper documents or books. The closed façade of the book storage facility has been designed with horizontal texturing and is separated from the superimposed functions by a recessed glass façade with surrounding terrace.

The engaging and dynamic proposal for the Dalian Library by 10 design represents an attention for both an urban and internal connectivity. The library is intended to be a transformative environment that pulls visitors into a unique landscape. The building weaves into the ground creating a series of courtyards and topographic undulations- rooting itself, and then sweeping up into the air forming a bold urban landmark becoming a community center for the neighborhood. The shifting of the mass creates spaces ranging from the intimate spaces for reflection in the courtyard to the dynamic and expansive views offered from the tower volume. The tower volume has a series of internal voids and terraced spaces to further enhance the variety of spatial conditions and to provide internal connectivity. A series of retail functions including cafes will help draw a larger audience to the library. A large media center that shares the central drop-off can be used after hours and function independently.
The mass responds and is shaped by views into the site and
outward to the surrounding sea and mountains. A green hill over the media
center forms an outdoor gathering space and amphitheater and will offer water
views to the southern sea. A roof top café on the tower volume provides
panoramic views of the mountains and sea.
The façade of the library is a dark grey brass that will
develop a beautiful patina over time. The metal skin will have a natural
resistance to the marine conditions and harsh weather. The smaller voids in the
buildings mass will use an anodized aluminum brass alloy to remain vibrant and
colorful as the rest of the building transforms with time.

Developed by evgeny markachev + julia kozlova, the public library proposal implements the use of the philosophical ‘yin and yang’ sign as the form driver of the structure, symbolizing two different origins through interaction and complementarity.
Due to the dynamic form the edifice is visually in constant movement, designating the other zones to be harmoniously distributed in the internal areas of the building.
This feature reflects the modern intensity and information interchange, dynamics of modern life.
1. The place: There is a residential area in the south-west, a church and public buildings in the east .
2. New boundaries of the site: The shift of the designed boundaries with a view to preserve the existing green zone and the distance bet on the residential area and the library
4. Two pans: The total volume of the building is divided into two parts by one of the main existing in this territory pedestrian routes.
5. Two functional nodes: The object has the appearance of the symbol and is divided Into two amphipathic by the meaning, but complementing each other functional nodes: -receipt of information -communication spaces
6. Lowered by one store: Half of the building is lowered by one store y to the level of the dwelling houses along which it is located _ This will provide the sufficient light conditions for the residential constructions and a more harmonious combination of the new building and of the existing one
8. Twisted both parts relatives to each other FoRowingthe concept design not only the internal line forms the contours of the 'Yin and Yang" symbol, the faces are turned with respect to the centre creating the constant movement of the volumes to each other. This completes the formation of the image solution _
9. Green areas The terraces are planted; ascents to them are created along the building volumes. Both directions are intersected in the middle forming a common site. The territory in front of the facility is beautified (an area with a reservoir).
10. Entrance, exits, walking routes Each of the two functional parts has its own entrance. The main entrance from the square from the side of the main road. The upper storeys have exits to the terraces. A new walking direction is formed through the facility by the terraces that passes diagonally between the streets.
