Zoomlion Headquarters Exhibition Center

The Zoomlion Headquarters Exhibition Center is located in the city of Changsha, Hunan Province of China. The project has a total of four floors with a footprint of 3,100 square meters, a total area of 10,074.90 square meters, and a total building height of 26 meters. Zoomlion is one of China’s leading manufacturers of heavy machinery equipment and ranked top 10 globally in the heavy machinery industry. Our criteria for the design for its headquarters exhibition center are to match its forward thinking, unique, and mechanistically imaginative corporate image and values.

The most unique aspect of our project design is the building’s ability to change shape, or transform, literally. The double skin system throughout the building makes this “transformer building” possible. The inner skin takes care of the enclosure and building systems. The outer skin contains operable portions which can be opened or closed to mimic different animal forms. From a plain rectangular box as the initial state, the north facade transforms into an eagle and a butterfly, the south folds into a swimming frog. These animal forms reflect the company’s understanding of the delicate balance between nature and artificial invention, and their embrace for environmentally sound human development. Also, as a design strategy, we adopted ideographic forms to convey traditional Chinese cultural symbolism for leadership (eagle), ephemerality and fragility (butterfly) and prosperity (toad).

The intricate pattern on the façade is originally inspired by the wing patterns on butterflies or dragonflies. To achieve the systematic and organic nature of the patterns found on the wings of these insects, we used parametric modeling tools to generate and design the façade. The material for the skin is steel and glass. The pattern provides a light but sturdy structure. It conceals and incorporate the hydraulics which move and hold it in place. The result is a beautifully laid out intricate pattern, which allows daylight to penetrate into the exhibition hall and light emanate out into the corporate campus at night.

To bring this design into actuality and assure its functionality and durability, we have been working with renowned international engineering firms on the constructability and procurement process. Their experience has shown how a cross disciplinary effort can increase the efficiency and quality of the product. Kinetic and static structures are separated as engineering services. Engineers in coordination with architect and client will provide a set of system specifications for both static and kinetic structures, similarly to product specification. After the schematic design phase all documents are given to a specialty fabricator with engineering capability to design, fabricate, install and warranty the final product, overseen by the original engineer. This streamline process starts communication early, allowing each team to interject into the process in time to provide their strength and assure the highest quality result.

Located in the mountainous landscape of Gyeongju, South Korea, the Korea Hydro Nuclear Power Headquarters avoids becoming an obtrusive landmark tower in order to respect the geographic and historic aspects of the site. A simple, clean design that represents the rich culture of Gyeongju also becomes a symbol of KHNP as the creator of the world’s cleanest and safest means of energy production. Wrapped in a shell of Corten Steel, the headquarter building is a subtle architecture that blends with and emerges from the adjacent mountainside.

 The city is one of the most historically significant cities in the country and East Asia. Once the capital of the Shilla Dynasty, one of most prosperous and long-lasting dynasties of Korea’s 5,000-year national history, the city takes pride in preserving a great number of Korea’s oldest architecture and national treasures. Due to the project’s conditions, as well as the social and political implications of the program, the design must be approached with careful consideration for the site and also with an innovative form that graciously illustrates the dynamism of hydro-nuclear energy. To do this, the massing of the building emerges from an adjacent mountainside and grows upward in an elliptical plan, referencing the orbiting of electrons of an atom. This gesture creates a graceful centripetal form that also seamlessly relates to the immediate landscape.

The requirements included a variety of governmental office and civic programs as well as attentiveness for sustainable design. A large number of welfare programs create the need for a substantial communal base, and the office related programs stack vertically while growing in a spiral curve without having to propose an out-of-scale tower in the middle of the green landscape. Radiating from the elliptical center are podium masses that contain fitness facilities, meeting rooms, lobbies, and an auditorium. These podiums are divided by outdoor walkways that guide pedestrians into the building as well as into the internal courtyard. The elliptical tower floats on pilotis and creates gateways for these walkways, a reference to the gates of traditional Korean buildings that connect inner and outer courtyards.

Because the form creates a sense of inner and outer, and because of solar orientation, two approaches for the façade design were employed. For the inner façade that faces south and inward to the courtyard, a transparent façade design with controlled shading was necessary to allow optimal light for the offices within. This was achieved by designing a shading module that changes in depth and width according to the rotating orientation toward the west. On the outer façade, a metal shell embraces the building mass, slightly folded near the bottom in a continuous line to accentuate a sense of movement of the electrons. The metal is panelized and perforated with a pattern resembling one of Gyeongju’s most treasured historical icons, the Emille Bell. This surface articulates an otherwise solid north facing building skin, which is necessary for insulating the headquarter building against harsh Korean winters and northern winds.

As with many new government agency headquarters in Korea, abundant recreational and semi-public spaces were incorporated to contribute to a healthy working environment and community-friendly functions. Amenities such as several sports fields, gardens, promenades, and ecological water reservoirs inspired by the famous historical water feature of the old city, contrast the dynamic hardscapes of the outdoor landscape. A large entrance plaza leads to a multi-level central courtyard space. This central outdoor space conceals vehicular drop-off circulation while offering a unique experience with the stepped lawn plaza and water feature. On the west side of the site, the elevated ground level extending from the mountainside contains tennis courts and a walking garden that merges onto the roof of the auditorium building. As the building mass arises from this mountainside, the stepped roof of the building contains green spaces as well as zones for solar panels.

The House, located in Nassau, Bahamas, is located off the northern coastal route and directly facing the Ocean on a beach site. The main view, towards north-east, governs the house main orientation. The design for the house takes inspiration from the myth of Polyphemus, the one-eye giant and his professed by the ocean love for Galatea.

The villa, nicknamed “Cyclops” is conceived as a viewing device that is carefully directed towards the commanding vistas in the surroundings. Imagined as a “stacked” 3-layer system, the house is clearly divided vertically from public to private areas. The views-vistas gradually zoom-in or narrow in, rather to follow the vertical zoning progression.

The 3 layers are organized also functionally to enhance the site characteristics and maximize the green-sustainable aspects of the project. The ground floor is ideally presented as a transparent glass box. It contains all public spaces (living, kitchen, pool, garden, deck, etc.) Via operable wall windows, the ground floor greatly takes advantage of the cross ventilation as the main green feature.

The second level works as a “connector” between the top and bottom floor and it’s programmatically intended to be a semi-public space. Mostly carved to allow for soaring double height spaces at grade, it features passing bridges that lead to the family/fun/recreation areas to the east of the house. In addition an overhang and terrace produce additional shade to the lower level thus reducing need for forced and mechanical cooling.

Via stairs and elevator, one reaches the third level where all bedrooms are located. Divided into 3 main periscope like wood-clad volumes (the Cyclops) the bedrooms are comfortable and luxurious areas which are both private and dynamically connected. The westward “Cyclops” contains the master suite, master bath and a private study/den in the south wing.

The middle “Cyclops” is dedicated to the rest of the family and children with access to private outdoor terraces. Finally to the east a separate access stairs get access to the employees’ quarters which are equally connected to the rest of the house via the main corridor-spine.

A guest house-cottage completes the site to the west, framing the pool and the garden. Solar panels are located on both the garage and cottage roofs, granting plenty supply of vital energy. In addition a facade of photo-voltaic cell panels clad the southern wall of the second floor enabling greater use of electrical needed power.

The linked configuration activates movement and exchange within the workplace, creating horizontal “streetscapes” and vertical connections. The expansion will provide space for 12,000 additional employees and nearly quadruples the size of Tencent’s current workplace real estate portfolio.

With two towers, ranging from 192- to 250-meters high, the campus will be connected by three sky bridges to “activate movement and exchange within the workplace.”

Each bridge will be designed to support its own unique theme. For example, the highest bridge, suspended nearly 180-meters above the tech district, will be centered around a theme of “knowledge” and feature libraries, conference rooms and other amenities that support learning.

In addition, the slight rotation of the towers and their offset heights capture the site’s prevailing winds, ventilating the atria while minimizing exposure to direct sun. To control glare and heat-gain, the curtain wall incorporates a modular shading system that varies according to the degree of sun exposure. Location: Shenzhen, China
